society connections

Goal: Analyze the relationship between the relationship between a literary text and its historical, social and/or political context
What are some similarities between our society and the society in The Giver?
The Giver pictures a community in which every person and his or her experience is precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition is eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works for the common good. What advantages might "sameness" have for a community? Is this loss of diversity worthwhile? Explain.

Some similarities to our community and The Givers is that we all have people in the community, and have houses. Also, we have aircrafts in our community, but they can’t go over the community like The Givers did. Some advantages for sameness to everyone in the community is that no kids will be whining over who has a bike and they don’t have one. Or that they don’t look as good as one of their friends. I don’t think that everyone in the community should be the same. They all want to be different from one another because we are all unique in our own special ways. Even though someone might not see that in another, everyone is unique no matter what they do. If they go to school and get A’s on everything to taking care of their mom/dad when they are sick we all have something special in ourselves. Also if we were all the same I think the community would just be plan and no color. When everybody wears something different from another person we all make new fashions for another one to wear. We all make someone want to wear what you wore when you give them new ideas or fashion to experience with.

One similarity our society has with the society described in The Giver is that we both have rules. It is very unlikely that a community would not have rules. We also have jobs, as does Jonas' community. Another comparison we have with The Giver is that we have officials that make and enforce the rules. The Giver’s officials are called the Elders, where as we have mayors, senators, and representatives.
In The Giver, all of the citizens are the same. The advantages that come from system are that there is no jealousy and no competition. Everyone is treated the same, and no one has a lower status. Without diversity, though, life would be boring. If everyone dressed the same, acted the same, had the same items, there would be no surprises. If they had differences, everything would just be more fun. Diversity is something that should not be replaced.

There are a lot of similarities between our society and their society. One of them is they’re “normal” people. By “normal” I mean they have feelings and emotions like we do. They also live in dwellings like our own dwellings. They also eat like we do; foods like fruits, vegetables, and salmon. They go to school just like us, and they celebrate their birthdays. The only difference there is we celebrate our birthdays until we die. They stop celebrating theirs at the age of twelve. They all get jobs like we do, but they get theirs when they turn twelve, the last year they celebrate their birthdays. They all have families, except they can only have two children, one boy and one girl. They use bikes for transportation like some of us do. There are a lot of similarities, but there are basic differences also.

I agree with Audrey when she said that any community should have rules. What would a community look like with no rules? People would break into each others homes and take things without getting into trouble, or even going to jail. I also agree with Audrey when she said every one is the same. Yeah, she is right, but who would want to live in a community when everyone gets the same thing at the same time? In my opinion, there would be no reason to work hard in the community when you will get the same stuff as the other kids. That is the disadvantage of being the same as everyone else. Even though there are disadvantages, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any advantages. Yes, there would be no jealousy, but there would be no pride or reward for a job well done. I personally don’t want to be the same as the other kids. I want to work hard for the things that are important to me. I won’t work hard for the things that aren’t important to me. That’s what makes everyone special.

An advantage of the community's sameness would be that the kids have the same objects so they don't have to whine about what everyone has but them. Although it maybe boring go over to your friends house and finding everything the exact same. But our people have different regions to live in, diversity, and world awareness(most of the time). These things give us endless learning and most of the time fun. It would also be the major disadvantage of living right now. By stamping out the competition, kids and adults would have nothing to work for. No one would worry about promotions or grades becuase it is all set for you. You would have no choice in life. That is what would drive me crazy the most. I would ave no choices. I wouldn't even be able to try out new things. Some aspects of the community would be a nightmare and others we could learn from.

There are many similarities between our society and the society of The Giver. Firstly they have jobs, even though in our society not everyone is employed. Also they have houses, laws, and families. The advantages sameness might have for communities are many. Like for example in The Giver the babies are a given a comfort object and when they are eight it is taken away. This helps the little kids not to fight over toys, and helps the eights not make fun of each other for sleeping with a comfort object. But in my opinion not everyone should be the same, because then what is the use for the word unique? The world would just be really boring, and like it has no color. Having the same things and doing the same things would not be very fun. In this case I do not think the loss of diversity in worthwhile.

I agree with Audrey on how she said that there were rules in both our societies. Also how she said that we both have jobs. I also agree with Nina how she said that we all have birthdays, but we celebrate them until we are twelve, I would also like to add to hers by saying that our birthdays are on the actual day we were born unlike there’s, where the all turn the same age in December. Although I disagree with Nina when she says, “ They use bikes for transportation like some of us do.” Because not a lot of people us bikes for transportation anymore. They use mostly cars or airplanes because you cannot get very far on a bike. I also disagree with Audrey like Nina because of how she said, “Every one is the same” she is right in a way, but not everyone is exactly the same. By that I mean that it is not like the town is full of a bunch of Colleen’s. There are both girls and boys with different names, hobbies, and jobs. The last thing I want to comment on is Alexa’s blog. I totally agree with her on how she said, “Even though someone might not see that in another, everyone is unique no matter what they do. If they go to school and get A’s on everything to taking care of their mom/dad when they are sick we all have something special in ourselves.” Which is so true because if we all did the same thing there really would not be any discoveries.

The community in The Giver is like ours in many ways. The adults have jobs, like us. They all live in houses, even if they call it a dwelling. The children play, like us. They all have a family. They all go to school, like all of the children in reality have to. The advantages sameness would have in a community, is that if everyone only wanted the same thing, it would be easier to make only one thing, instead of many different types. I think the loss of diversity is not worthwile, because the world needs diversity. If everyone was the same, no one would have any new ideas. We wouldn't want to try anything new. Everyone would be considered average. There would be no smart people. No one would have any new ideas. No one would have any idols or role models, because they would be just like them.

  9. The community in The Giver is different in many ways. In The Giver the society has rituals that we don't have, while in our communtiy we can do what ever we want instead of having rules telling us what to do and what not to do. Such rules are would be having a time after dinner to share our feelings. While after dinner for us we do whatever we want. Also, we get a bike whenever our parents give it to us. Also, we get to pick our own career while in The Giver the Elders pick out jobs for the community people. We also can do whatever we want inside the rules of the state. In The Giver they have rules that are like never going outside the community and if you were released from the community then you can't come back. uWhile in our community we go to jail but after we spend our time in jail we get another chance, but still have it on the your record of doing something bad and not in the law. Other differences is that they get jobs at age twevle. We also have a big diference which would be the fact in which they have not seen animals before, but we see them all the time. Some of the similarities between our community and The Giver's communtiy is that we have some families that only have a mother, a father, two kids with a boy and girl. Also, we have airplanes and they have jets to carry food in and out of the community in common with The Giver.

Some similarities between our society and the society in The Giver it that we both have families, and friends. We both have schools, houses, and places to go. In our society, as well as The Giver's society, our people have feelings, and emotions. We both have jets or planes. Some advantages to The Giver's “perfect” society is that since there's no competition, then no one can lose, and that will eliminate jealousy. Because everyone in the society of The Giver has the same experience throughout their lives, no one has more advantage over anyone. Since everyone works for the common good of the society, everything that needs to get done, gets done. I don't think this loss of diversity is worthwhile. I think everyone should have their own interests and talents, and they should be able to pick what they want to do for the rest of their lives. For a good society, there needs to be some competition, or things will get boring. When you are a kid, you shouldn't have to do and wear what everyone else is doing and wearing. You should be able to choose your hobbies, and decide when you're ready to try new things, instead of being forced to do them. Diversity should be encouraged, not taken away.

The community in “The Giver” and our community are very similar in many ways. One way is that there are a lot of people with regular houses and regular jobs like we do. Also, we both have aircraft, but in the Giver, the airplanes can’t fly over the community. Another similarity are that the people in The Giver have people who are married with children like we do, but they can only have to kids, one girl, one boy. Lastly, we both have leaders. The Givers community has leaders called The Elders, while we have mayors and supervisors; One advantage of having sameness in Jonas’s community is that no one will be made fun of because everyone is mostly the same. No one would be picked on for being an only child because every family is to receive 2 children. Another advantage is that everyone is guaranteed a job at age 12, so everyone would have a job. It is a loss of diversity because I think everyone should be different and unique in their own way like in our community and every other community. Everyone should be different. If everyone was the same, life would be boring. Every community needs some diversity. It makes a community interesting.

Some similarities between our society and The Giver’s society are that they both have people with feelings. They have houses, schools, aircrafts, and nurseries. Physically, they are like us in many more different ways. Some advantages for “sameness” is that no one ever has to be judged, stereotyped, or ever feel bad because that person does not have what a wealthier person does.
Although not having jealousy or hate is a very good thing I think that having the loss of diversity that the giver’s society has is definitely not worthwhile. If everything is the same there is no room for improvement. Sometimes small amounts of hate and jealousy can be good. It drives many of us to try to be the best at building something or think of something totally new. Mistakes are brilliant when it comes to inventions. Some of the greatest inventions could have been a mistake. If we never made mistakes in our society we would live in a prehistoric age with boring people and a very dull color. Also, people need to be different. Children need their own personalities to get far. If you just get assigned an occupation, wake up the next day, and hate your job you do for the rest of your life. People should be able to be their selves without being threatened to be kicked out of their community. We need and strive for diversity and different personalities because that is what makes us people. I think the society of The Giver is full of too many robots unwilling to try new things.

I believe that each society is built on core components-the people, and the community they have chosen to build around their culture, just to name a few. Nevertheless, the people really have the power to build their community in whichever way they should chose. Obviously the Giver's community has chosen to live in a Utopia formatted to one's ideas of ideal. In some ways I suppose this "sameness" must come in helpful as there can be no unemployment or hunger or general unhappiness. So one must ask the question it worth living in uniform "sameness" if the community loses the many advantages of diversity. But can this be considered a loss if the people of the community have never known anything other than the consistency of their lives as they know them now? My opinion is that the community is missing out on the advantages of diversity-at the rate at which they are going nothing will ever change. New ideas may be brought forward, but they won’t really make a difference. Perhaps the society will never have the advantages of uniqueness. Actually their society is not so different from our own-all the basic components are there-we all have cultures and people and communities. However we do not imagine ourselves in a state of Eutopia-there are people starving, unemployed and some places are too crowded to live comfortably. However, since each individual in our society has a different idea of what is "perfect" or Eutopia than how can we say that the conditions we live in now are or are not ideal? However the people in the Giver's community know that their world is perfect and that there is a certain mindset that their society has, and in foresight, always will, live and mind by. There are advantages-each individual is guaranteed an occupation that is specially suited to the individual's interests. Each "family unit" built in the same structure-two parents and two children, male and female. That way there is balance. In our communities we have more freedom-we can have as many children as we like. We can choose a job based on our needs. In our world not everyone has the same advantages and disadvantages. But is This could be considered unfair and maybe it would be better if our lives were more controlled and all people were truly created equal then maybe our world would be a better place-but will we ever know?

I agree with Colleen and Zoe when they speak of the social advantages of the Giver's community-such as subtracted disputes over simple manners such as toys. This would be great to have if we could incorporate diversity into it! I also agree with the concept of not having anything to work for because basically your life is laid out for you. I disagree with Alexa about our aircrafts not being able to fly over our communities-in the Giver's community they are not supposed to have aircrafts flying over. I also disagree with what Erica said about Giver's community being too full of robots not willing to try new things-some of them want to-Lily wanted to keep the new child. Jonas took home the apple-some of them want to challenge the rules and regulations, yet at the same time they are under restraint by them-there are many people who believe that things are perfect the way they are. So in a way I guess I do agree with Erica. There are people who want to try new things, but there are also the "robots" who keep things the same. Maybe if more people would question authority and try new things the Giver's community could develop a more intricate society.

Our modern day community and the community in the Giver are similar in a few ways. First of all, both communities have citizens. Another similarity is that both communities have people in charge of them. Our community has mayors and senators, while their community has groups of Elders. And last of all, both communities have classes that provide education to students.
Sameness isn’t always a good thing. It takes away from people’s uniqueness. If everything is the same, then things get boring; you do the same thing every day, you own the same items as everyone else. If you own the same thing as everyone else, then you don’t learn morals such as sharing. All in all, you are the same as everyone else.

I agree with Stephanie when she says that both communities have families, friends, schools, buildings, and feelings. But in Jonas’s community, their jobs and families are assigned. Whereas in our community, we have more free will and can make our choices. I also agree with Sara when she says that both of the communities have aircraft, families, and jobs. The aircrafts can’t fly over the community in Jonas’s community, but in ours, they can. Also, in their community, they can only have two kids – a boy and a girl- but in our community, we have the right to choose. Sara also points these things out. I also agree with Steven when he says that the world needs diversity, or else there would be no one to look up to - no role models or idols – they would be just like you. I sort of disagree with Erica when she says that the society of the Giver is unwilling to try new things. I don’t think that they are necessarily unwilling as much as they aren’t allowed. I think it is more that the Elders are afraid that the community will change in a negative way if they change from their ancient ways. But I do agree with her when she says their community is dull and could use diversity. They do seem to act like robots.

I agree with Zoe when we go over to our friens house, we expect things to be different. We don't want everything to be the same as our house. I like how Antonia says that sameness isn't always a good thing, because it takes away our uniqueness. We don't all want to be the same. I also agree with Erica when she says if everyone is the same there is no room for improvement. No one will try to improve if everyone is the same. I like how Colleen said, if everyone is the same, what is the use for the word unique? No one wouldn've created the word if everyone is the same. I agree with Halle when she says that there is a balance in the community. Nothing is out of place. Everything is how it's supposed to be.

To answer Mrs. Costello (the amazing teacher that is tired like the rest of us by seventh period), I believe that diversity is absolutely necessary in an every day community. Diversity helps build character which is only human. When everyone doesn’t make mistakes because they are all (practically) perfect, people tend to not learn lessons that you can learn from the simplest of mistakes that will help you immensely later on in life. Everyone will lack necessary life experience that a lot of people would “pass away” for. Although this goes against my opinion, there may be some light to why a community would benefit to being “perfect”. Everything would be a lot less chaotic, which is one of the main reasons. There would be a sufficient amount of jobs, food, and supplies to reinforce the families that have been left with restrictions on several things such as the amount of children they can have, so that problems will not arise. They would also benefit from the way they choose jobs, so that everyone is set a job specific to their skills that they have acquired. War would be non-existent for they wouldn’t ever find the need to fight each other. Their community would be peaceful and calm, yet completely the same. It may not be worth it in the end though. To settle some of the differences, there are some things in common with our community and the community in “The Giver”. We all are based on one main government. Without that government in place, we would most likely be caught in civil war. This is the same with the community in “The Giver”. They are all based around their way of life, and if it was to collapse, or even change, there could be no telling what could happen. Both communities also have to go through the work to get what we want and need, instead of just magically making it appear like in some fairytale land. They both have farmers, doctors, weavers, engineers, teachers, pilots, and leaders. Everyone helps play a key role in our community and the fantasy community in “The Giver”.

There are many similarities in our society and the one in "The Giver". One similarity is that we both have families, jobs, and homes. This means that we can sort of relate to the book in a few ways. For instance, each family has kids, like our own families. Another way is that we each have jobs as well that st least sort of match our interests. We also both have bicycles which people will ride around on when they want to. Sameness is pretty good for awhile, but after awhile it might get boring. It can get pretty boring after awhile because it isn't that fun when everyone has the same stuff as you. Now, you know how that can get pretty boring after quite a bit of time. Also, without any diverseness, it isn't pretty fun. this is because people should look different and express themselves in what they feel is most right for them. That is why i think there should be diversity.

I agree with Steven when he says that the world needs diversity. Although, I completely disagree with him when he says that there will be no smart people, new ideas, or role models. The citizens in “The Giver” are the same as us, yet they simply have a lot more rules to follow. They can have role models, such as another person with a job they wish they had, or someone who is very kind to you. Also, despite Stevens’s negativity towards their mental capabilities, everyone in “The Giver” community will be able to imagine new ideas even though they have rules. Someone may want to even join the council so that they can try to put their ideas into action! I also agree with Whitney when she says that the community in “The Giver” is very different than ours. One of the main ideas that she mentions is their rules. They have a lot of different, stricter rules than our community. She also mentioned that the children of “The Giver” community are given life-long professions at the age of 12, while we are way beyond that age when we finally find our profession fit for us that we want to work towards. I believe that that is one of the biggest differences between our communities because that would probably never happen to the 12 year olds in our community. Nina mentioned that normal to us is normal to them, so whatever they do every day would be just like whatever we do every day. It really gives you a view of how their world would be. The rules, as Audrey said, are very important differences between the communities, and, in my opinion, make “The Giver” community what it is. Without the rules set in place, that perfect community would lose all of its order. When she said that the community would be better without competition, I had several doubts form in my head. Competition can give people an objective, or a goal, to achieve when they try to achieve something that is very difficult for them. As long as it is healthy competition, it can help people immensely.

The society in The Giver is very different from our society, but there are still some similarities between the two. For starters both societies have houses, people and forms of transportation, even though the means of transportation may be different. Secondly, we have a government that rules over us to make sure we obey the laws. Both societies also have schools that the children attend. The advantages of sameness is that one family will not hoard all the food or items, while another family may be suffering because they do not have enough to live on. Also, there would be no need for money because if everyone has the same things there is no reason why someone would want to acquire money. Another reason why, is because kids would never complain about things that someone else had, and they want because no one else would have anything that is different. Next, there would be no crime because if everyone has the same things then why would someone want another object that is the same. I think that it is not worthwhile to lose all diversity because variety is the spice of life. If there is no variety or diversity, then life would always be the same boring routine, and everyone would be the same. That’s why if there is no diversity there is no purpose in what they are doing because in the end everything and everyone will be the same.

I agree with Steven when he said that less diversity is bad because the world needs change. Also, that no one would have any new ides, because everyone would have the same ideas. This would be very boring and bland way of life. This is due to no diversity. I also agree with Nevin when he says that there would also be no chaos anywhere. This would be a good thing even though there would be no diversity. I also agree with Antonia when she says that people wouldn't learn good morals such as sharing with others. Colleen also has a good point when she says that it would be pretty boring in this world and colorless if there was no diversity. So, diversity is pretty important in this world.

I agree with Antonia when she said that a community needs uniqueness and that sameness isn’t a good thing. Every community has something that is unique. For instance, we have the lake and Presque Isle that makes us unique. Also, we have very unique people. Everyone in our community comes from a different background and everyone looks different. Also, sameness isn’t a good thing because our community would be very boring. If everyone was the same, you wouldn’t be able to tell one person from another. Being different is good. I also agree with Antonia when she commented on Erica’s post when she said that it’s not that people are unwilling to try new things as much as they aren’t allowed to. Antonia makes a good point. I also agree with Stephanie when she said that diversity should be encouraged not taken away because diversity, in my opinion, is important. A good community is diverse with all different people. There are quite a few of the similarities I have noticed between our community and the community in the story. One of the main similarities is that all children in both communities have to attend school. Also, there are laws or rules that must be obeyed by all citizens if the stories community and ours. Similarity has its advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages are that there is no jealousy. I feel that since everybody is on the same playing field that everything is fair. Plus you have no children that do not have the same chance to succeed as other children in the community. I am strongly opinionated in the fact that this is not worthwhile. I am a strong believer in the fact that what is received must be earned. I feel that jealousy and competition are some of the many things that drive people to do their best. People need individuality to help express their feeling as well. If everything and everybody are all the same it could make any community a pretty dull place. People are aloud to express themselves by wearing different types of clothing and by simply being their own person and I feel it should stay that way.

The only advantage ‘sameness’ gives to a community is that no one can get picked on for having something different or unique about them. I do not think that everybody should be the same. I believe that all people should have different looks, personalities, interests, feelings, ect. Everyone should be unique in a special way. I feel that sameness just makes everything very boring and dull. Some things should stay the same though, maybe getting bikes when you become and Eight ad getting your jobs when you become a Twelve. I think a couple things should stay the same so there aren’t children that are upset because they don’t have what other kids their age do have. All in all, I believe people should be unique, but rules for each ceremony could stay the same.

I think that a controlled sociaty is a bad thing. There are definetly some good things about a utopia sociaty. But I think that overall it is a bad idea. People learn from experiances, good and bad. When you make a bad descion you learn from your mistakes. Hopefully you never make that mistake again. I also think that bad experiances help build charecter. If you lose something important to you, you learn not to take atvantage of the things you have. And hardships bring people together. If you had to live in a refugee camp with a person you didnt like, when you get out you will most likly talk more often and like each other a little more. You need to have diversity to have a utopia in my opinion. If you dont have diversity utopia is useless.

I disagree with Stephanie when she said that an advantages to The Giver's ‘perfect’ society is that since there's no competition, then no one can lose, and that will eliminate jealousy. I feel that there should be competition. It creates diversity in the community as to who is better at something. Usually, when people lose in a competition, they try to work harder so they can win next time. In a competition when people lose, they usually get jealous of the other team for playing better than them. You could still shoots hoops, or play catch, but I believe that people need competition. Without it, I think life would be very boring. Also, I feel that there needs to be jealousy in a community. When someone is jealous, that means they want to be better at something, or more like someone. But, I some what agree with her when she talks about eliminating jealousy because sometimes jealousy causes fights. When some people have jealousy, they get very mad at the person they are jealous of, even if it’s a friend of theirs. I agree with Stephanie when she says everyone should have their own interests and talents. Because if everyone was interested in the same thing, they would all apply or have the same job as each other, which would not be good. Everyone should have different jobs so the society can have everything the need. Although the citizens in society do not get to pick their jobs directly, the Committee of Elders watched each Eleven very closely at almost everything they did, whether it was volunteering, at school, or some where else, they were being watched closely. The Elders always took their job very seriously and choose a job that fitted each Eleven’s(soon to be Twelve’s) interests.

But, Jonas’ community is required to have a married couple, with two kids, a boy and a girl. Also, in both of our communities, we have jobs with interests. There are advantages, however for Jonas’ community. For example, since everybody is equal, nobody will be competitive, jealous, or anything. However, I think that not everyone should be the same. Everybody should be at least a little unique. If everyone were the same, everything would be to plain and boring. If you are unique, then you can experience different things and inspire others to do the same. In my opinion, the loss of diversity is very unfortunate, because they won’t be able to experience different things and be unique.

Some similarities we have between our society and the givers are that we have the same needs, we have aircrafts and we both have children, adults, and elderly. We also have garbage disposal and fruits and vegetables. Sameness might have an advantage because there would be no jealousy, no war, no storm, no sunburns, and the rate of death would decrease because there would be no starvation or disease. Also the population would become more stable because of the number of births in each age group. Sameness is not a good idea because everything is the same. This is bad because people lose the ability to make choices about a lot of different things like when you get a bicycle or when you have to where hair ribbons. If this happened people would lose their diversity about and everyone would be the same. If everything was the same then life would become bland and colorless. People always want something special in their lives and if there is nothing special everything becomes the same. These are my views on sameness, the similarities between our and the givers community, and why sameness is a disadvantage.

One similarity between our societies is the fact that we both have shelter to live under, and food to eat. Some societies may not have this option so our society and Jonas’s society should consider ourselves very lucky. Another similarity between them is that both the societies have schools and education. Jonas and his sister Lily both go to school, and so do all of us. We all have the opportunity to get a good education the benefit the rest of our lives. Some advantages for not having diversity, or having “sameness”, is that kids will not be upset that some of their friends have more than they do, or have more brothers and sisters than they do. Or even the fact that all kids get their comfort object taken away at the same time, so there will be no upsets about some kids getting to keep their comfort object for a longer amount of time. However, the loss of diversity would definitely not be worthwhile. I believe that all kids should grow up with different lifestyles, because without this you would just have a very bland community. Not having diversity would not be a good thing for any community because there wouldn’t really ever be anything exciting going on. When kids make friends, they are never exactly the same as they are. I feel that friendship should be based off of likes and differences. I believe that diversity is a great thing to have in a good community.

There are many similarities between The Giver’s society and ours. We both have schools, families, friends, and jobs. We all have feelings, problems, weaknesses, talents ..etc. Both societies also have laws we enforce, though some laws are not the same. In the Giver there are many rules and everyone lives their life mostly the same. There are some advantages to this lifestyle, yet there are some disadvantages. A few advantages are that when the children in their community are growing up they all get mostly the same privileges. That way no child would get jealous because all his or her friends have something that he doesn’t. An example from the story would be how they all receive a comfort object when they are newborns and they all get it taken away when they turn eight. A disadvantage would be that there would be no diversity in the society. So it might make their lives boring with no differences. I think its good for everyone to be different, that way you can have something to talk about. Because if everyone is the same you couldn’t really talk about anything because everyone has experienced the same things. I personally think it’s a good thing to be unique and different, because without it life would just be boring.

I agree with Garret when he said that one of the similarities between our communities is that we both have to attend school. Also I like how Garret said that in both communities we have to obey laws and rules. I also agree with Cole on how he said that both communities have jobs, families, and homes. I like how Antonia said that we have mayors and governors and they only have a group of elders. I like how Sara put that no one will be made fun of because they have mostly the same material objects. I agree with Steven when he said that the world needs diversity and it’s not worthwhile to give it up. I like how Nina said that they get jobs but not until there’re 12. I also agree with Nevin when he said that they would all have jobs that are adequate to their skills and talents. I do not agree with Elise when she said that they would not be upset because their friends have more siblings then they do.

Some of the similarities that our society and The Giver share are that we have houses and jobs. Now we don’t get our jobs at 12 like they do, but we do have jobs. We both get married and have kid, although in The Giver they only have one boy and one girl that’s it. Also they have schools and leaders. They go to school until the age of 12 unlike us when we go until we are at least 18. There is some good in having sameness in a society. One advantage in having sameness would be no bullying. Kids would not get made fun of for what they have or what they don’t have. Jealousy and envy would be eliminated. No one be jealous of what other people have it. Everything would be equal. The question then would be is the loss of diversity worthwhile? I personally think it’s important to have diversity in a community. I think it’s not worthwhile because the community would be plain and boring. No one would be really special they would almost be like robots. Its what makes people interesting. In my opinion it is nice to have more diversity in the society then sameness.

I agree with Sara and Tyler. I agree that there should not be sameness in a community because that is what makes life interesting. Also, I agree that diversity is kind of like the spice of life. You need to be different and unique, but in your own ways. When Alexa said that there would be no whining and the problems over what people have and what they look like would be gone I agree with that. I think you should be thankful for what you have, and not complain about it. Also, when Audrey said about life would have no surprises and not be fun that would be true. Everything would be like a routine no changes, no breaks, just same old, same old. I believe Zoe is right when she said that everything would be already chosen for you. You would have no choice in your life and in your future. An example would be that the Elders choose your job for you. I think that there should be very little sameness in a community. Mostly diversity and uniqueness.

What are some similarities between our society and the society in The Giver?

Our society and the society in The Giver have many similarities. One thing that I noticed was the same is that they go to school. The story has not gone into much detail about it yet, but right now it seems quite similar to our way of life at school. Another is they have some sort of government. That part of the story is very vague right now, but some organization is definitely holding their community together sort of like how our government enforces order and prevents chaos in our everyday lives. I know that our society and the society in The Giver are similar in many ways, but those are just a couple examples of why they are alike.

What advantages might "sameness" have for a community?

The similarities in the community of The Giver can be advantageous. One piece of evidence that makes that statement true is that it makes the community organized. An example of this is that all the families have one boy, one girl, a mom, and a dad. By controlling number of family members overpopulation will never be a problem. Without overpopulation there will be no hunger in the community, which is yet another advantage I noticed. I do not believe there are many advantages to “sameness” in a community, but I did recognize a few.

Is this loss of diversity worthwhile?

No, I believe that diversity is what makes life interesting. Without diversity we would have no cool experiences for example, visiting places like the Grand Canyon. Without diversity in people, businesses, etc. life would just be tasteless and uneventful.

I believe that "The Giver" has a entirely different community than ours. My first reason is that each family is only allowed to have two children, a boy, and a girl. Another reason is that you are done with school when you turn 12, and you receive your jobs too. Also, you don't have a real birthday, you just have to be born within the same year, so you could have just been born, but your still 1. Planes aren't allowed to fly over the community, and the community is under strict rules. If you break the rules though, you don't go to jail, you are released from the city. If you live there, your whole entire day is planned out, and if you are late to class, you have to make an apology statement in front of the class. You are given certain things and have certain things taken away if you live in the community at a certain age. At the end of the day, after dinner, you have to share feelings with your family. These are the reasons that "The Giver" is different from our community. Some similarities, however are that each community has people in charge, jobs, school, aircraft, and homes in which the people live in.

I disagree with Kelsey when she says that if there is no diversity then everyone’s life would be the same. If everyone’s life would be the same everyone could relate to what the other person has done. I do agree with Kelsey when she says that since kids don’t have different items then they will not be jealous of someone else. I also disagree with Stephanie when she says that in the Giver’s perfect society there is no competition so that will no one will lose and that will eliminate jealously. I think that is not true because competition is good for character building because it shows people how they might react to pressure or sadness, and that could help the elders decide what assignment would be right for them. I agree with Steven when he says that it would be easier to have everyone the same because they would only have to make only one thing rather than many different things. An example of this is if everyone liked skiing and not snowboarding, then they wouldn’t have to waste resources to make something no one wants. I disagree with Steven also, when he says that no one would be smart because people may still develop information better than other people, even though they are all learning the same things. I agree with Emma when she says that there would be no bullying because if everyone had the same things and did the same things then there would be no reason to make fun of someone else. I agree with Eric when he said since there are only 4 people per family there would be no overcrowding and since there is no overcrowding, no one would ever go hungry.

I agree with Erica when she says that the community in the Giver is like a bunch of robots that are unwilling to try new things. Their whole lives are governed by rules. They dont have any idea what it is like to dislike someone or to have a snow day at school. They all get their bikes at the same age, hair ribbons out at the same age, their Assignments at the age. I think this is wrong because there might be someone who works a lot harder and deserves what their getting, while someone else might not have worked as hard, yet they are getting the same privledges as the person who worked hard. I disagree with Tyler when he says if everyone was the same then they could relate to each other. It is good to relate to someone sometimes, but other times you need to figure things out by yourself. If you always have someone to relate to than you just learn to deal with things the way they did. Then you start to lean on them to deal with your problems. There are just some things that you need to deal with yourself and find your own way to conquer your problems. If you lean on someone else to help you, then you arent really conquering anyhting. You are just making the time longer until youhae to figure things out yourself.

I agree with Audrey when she said that there are rules in both society's. Without rules, everyone and everything would be in complete chaos. I also agree with Steven when he said that without diversity, no one would come up with new ideas. If no one ever had new ideas, then we would never find cures for diseases. We would never come up with new technology to improve our society. I definitely think Erica was right when she said that we need mistakes, because sometimes our mistakes can lead to great things. Erica was right when she said that a little jealousy is good, and that the people in The Givers society are dull and boring. I don't agree with Erica when she said that the people in The Giver's society act like “robots” and are unwilling to try new things. If the people in the society were aloud to try different things, I'm sure they would. I also think that they don't do new things, because if they do, they may be punished. Halle said that an advantage to The Giver's society is that they are assigned a job especially picked for their interests. I disagree with this, because the person might be interested in something at the beginning of their lives, but may change there mind later. Since they are already assigned their jobs, they can not change, and they are stuck with it for the rest of their lives.

Some similarities between our society and the society in the Giver are we both have jobs. Another similarity is that we both have families in our societies. In the Giver they aren’t allowed to have more than two children in their family a boy and a girl, but that is still a family. We also both have houses and schools in our societies. Sameness might make sure that there are no bullies. Bullies usually make fun of people because of their differences. So if there are no differences, then there most likely not going to be any bullies. Also sameness means you wouldn’t be judged by what type of clothes you wear, or your physical ability. Another way sameness is good is because there would be no competition, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Like when you are playing a game you want some sort of competition, or else there would be really no point in playing it. In some ways sameness is good and bad. Now I will tell you about some of the ways I think it’s bad. Sameness can be bad because you are special in your own way. Difference is good because you can learn different religions, dances, music, food, and more. How else did we learn all the stuff we know now. Not being different means you can’t make your own style of clothes. We should keep diversity, because then we can just be ourselves.

I think the community in The Giver is a much more Utopian society than ours. We both have a few similarities in our communities. They include, that we both have rules or laws and we both have leaders. Also, we both have a society with largely enforced education. Either way I think a Utopian society would be harder to live in because doing everything the same way your whole life would get boring, especially if other people are making choices for you. Diversity needs to exist somewhere because what if we were all just gray blobs? How would you tell mom from dad, friend to friend, and many other things apart? Having diversity makes everyone unique. The loss of it is not worthwhile. Sameness would get people nowhere in life because we all have to make different decisions like what job to take and where it might take you

Our community and Jonah’s community has many similarities. Some of our similarities are that we all get food water and shelter when we really need it, everyone gets to have a lot of rights and we all have a public school system. Even though our community is like this, many communities are suffering Jonah’s community is extremely lucky in this way. The sameness of the community has some advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages would include that there would be no more wars and everyone is at peace. There would also be no jealousy and everything is expected. Another advantage is that this helps people bond together and when everyone works together the community would benefit greatly. There would be disadvantages to I believe that one of the most important things for humans to feel is the element of surprise, change and so on, I think that these are important things to experience. Another disadvantage is that there would be no advances in technology. If everything is the same then the people wouldn’t feel the want for change which is what causes advances in technology. I think that the sameness of the community is a bad idea.

I agree with Arnold when he says in both our community and their community adults both have jobs. I also agree with Arnold when he said that their community had no role models or idols. I think that communities need someone they can look up to. I agree with Stephanie when she said that kids should be allowed to try out different things not everyone should be the same. I agree with Sara’s idea of not being picked on for being a single child because everyone gets two children. I also agree with Sara’s idea about needing life to be more interesting. Lastly I agree with Audrey’s idea of thinking of the mayor as the board of elders.

No one would get new ideas to share because everyone’s life is the same in the Giver. I also agree with Elise when she says that Jonas’s society and ours are very lucky in what we have in common together. You could say that we are lucky in what we have like schools, houses, food, friends and family, and etc. While somewhere other in the country not many people have food or water, or even shelter to live with, so I say that we are very lucky in what we have today. I disagree however with the fact that Halle says that aircrafts are supposed to fly over us in our society. I think not because you wouldn’t want aircrafts flying over you at a fast speed while your down in your house, and the house starts shaking. People would probably think something is wrong if an aircraft flew over your society low to the ground like Jonas did. You would want them high in the sky number one so they don’t shake your house and everything falling comes crashing down. Number two is so people in the society don’t think anything is wrong when the aircrafts go flying past them.

Our society and the utopian society pictured have some similarities. First they have rules and people to enforce them. We also have aircrafts, bicycles, hair ribbons, and stuffed animals also except we don’t have ceremonies or specific rules to get them. “Sameness” I think does have some advantages. If there is “sameness” there are a lot of equalities, and everything is fair. A disadvantage would be something like no competitions. There would be nothing for you to be proud of. Although diversity is sometimes better. Diversity is a way to express yourself or a way to be different. Without diversity everyone is the same, so they all have the some likes, dislikes, and personalities. Everything and everyone would be a lot blander.

Also when Sara talked about how there is an advantage to having your job selected for you, so you wouldn’t make the wrong job decision. I also agree with Erica on how there are no ways to be judged or ever feel bad. Which is not bad, but there would be no way for you to special or to brag about something also. I also agree with Kelsey when she was talking about how there were all equal possessions, so everything would be fair. I agree with Taylor when she says that no one should look the same, and that they shouldn’t have the same personality or feelings. Our society and The Givers are very different, but there are still some similarities between them. We both have forms of transportation such as bikes and airplanes. Both communities have houses for people to live in and families to live in them. They also both have people living in societies. We both have many kinds of jobs throughout the society. Both societies have schools for the children to attend. They also both have a form of government that make rules for the society to obey. Some advantages that sameness would be good for the society would be the following: There would never be any fighting or bullying in the school or outside of the school because all of the kids are the same. No one would go hungry because everyone would have an equal amount of food. There would be no criminals because they would not need to rob anyone because they already have it or don’t need it. There would also be no murder because no one would get mad at someone because everyone is exactly the same. I think it is not worth it to lose all diversity. If we lost all diversity it would be almost the exact same routine every day. And after a while people would get bored of what they have been doing for the past years and bad things could happen. Creativity would be lost since everyone is thinking the same and no one is thinking outside of the box. There would be no game-winners because everyone would be the same and do the same moves so you could never win. She said, “One similarity between our societies is the fact that we both have shelter to live under, and food to eat.” I know she is right because in the giver they have dinner just like we do, which has been the setting multiple times in the story. I do not agree with Kelsey’s statement that the community in the giver is exactly like ours, because our societies are very different in many ways. For example, we know that animals exist, we celebrate birthdays after twelve years old, etc. For the second question (What advantages might "sameness" have for a community?) I agree with Austin Guo. He said “ Some advantages would include that there would be no more wars.” I believe that Austin’s statement is correct because everybody is working for a common good, they (currently from what we know) have no religious beliefs, and they all look the same. Without these differences conflict is less likely to occur. For the final question (Is this loss of diversity worthwhile?) I agree with everybody, because we all (to wrap it up) said that diversity is what makes us who we are.

Many people would think that our society and the Givers are very different, but if u think about it, we are alittle of both. I think that our society and the Givers society are alike because we both have unique people. Asher and Jonas are very different, asher is most times alittle off and isn't always focused. Jonas on the other hand is worried in many parts of the book and he is a very jenerous person. Us and the Giver are alike in another way too. That way is that we sometimes we asign jobs by some citzens skills and interests. In the Giver the Elders watch the twelves to see what job they would be the best at. We are very different also. We do not relese people if they are not perfect or if they screw up. We give the person a chance to retry, and fix there mistakes. Haveing sameness would have some advantages and they would be that you will always have something incommon with someone, always have the same problems so you can talk about them, and last they would help in school because we would always know the right answer because everyone has to know the same as everyone else. Diversity, we need it with out it all wil be lost. All creativity, competition, knowledge, being different, would all be disappear. It would be the most boring life if we didnt have diversity. we wouldn't have anything different, or new, or anything to surprise your friends about. We need diversity.

I do not agree with Ben when he said the society in The Giver is more of a Utopian society. To me, not having diversity is a bad thing, therefore it is not a Utopian society, or “perfect world”. In their minds, however, it may be because everything is under control. I do agree with Caitlin when she said that bullies do usually pick on kids because of their differences, and that without differences we may not have this problem. But, I do not agree with Kevin when he said that without diversity there would be no wars, death, or storms. A Utopian society doesn’t necessarily mean there would be no weather effects, because no one can control the weather. Also, just because kids have everything anyone else has doesn’t mean they wont get into fights. I also agree with Alexa when she said that no kids would be jealous of one another’s things. I think this is a great thing to have in society because no kids would be jealous, but I still think diversity is a good thing. Erica also made a good point when she said people should be able to be themselves without being kicked out of the community. I strongly agree with her, because people should be able to do that.

Even though I am sure they have many rights they obviously do not have as many as we do. They don’t have the right to choose there own jobs or even pick who they marry! The rules in their community are much stricter than they are in ours. I agree with Tyler Nerthling when he says that without diversity we would always be in the same routine. I think sameness would have many advantages, one is nobody would be jealous of other people’s possessions. Also I like the idea of having your job based on your interests and what your good at. Sameness is also good because there would be hardly any robberies if everyone had the same possessions. I think the loss of diversity is worth it, in The Giver everyone seems so happy with their rules. It also would not be hard to get a job since they have other people find a job for you. Also people would be respectful and nicer because of their rules. There are many similarities and advantages of living in our life and in The Giver’s life. It may seem like the utopian society in The Giver and our world today are two very different places. That may be true in some cases, but in others we can relate to Jonas’s world. Both of our lives consist of friends and families who love and care about us. However, even though that makes us very alike, it also makes us different. Our friends aren’t all the same age as us and most of our family members are blood related unlike the families in the giver who are assigned children. Another difference in these two societies is the way the utopian society celebrates birthdays. We celebrate birthdays in a very different way. In The Giver, all children celebrate their birthday on the same day and stop celebrating after turning twelve. In contrast, our society today celebrates birthday on the day you were born which is usually different than most people, and we keep celebrating year-after-year. A few other similarities between our two civilizations include that we both have laws or rules, homes, education, jobs, and also many others. Even if the similarities have flaws between the two worlds like how our laws are less strict than Jonas’s, they are still very similar yet unique in their own way. Many people may think that Jonas’s world is so much different but if you think hard about our ways of life they are very similar maybe just worded or executed differently. Those are my examples of the similarities and differences of our world and the utopian society in The Giver.
In my opinion, I think the society in the giver is disappointing because of the lack in diversity. I believe if we see that everyone and everything is perfect and the same it is not teaching us anything. Sure, the society in the giver denies bragging and jealousy, but those things teach us a lot. I think having different levels of people in our society is a good thing because we see that we all have different levels of learning and if we look a little different it is okay. If we all looked the same and owned the same things it would be bland. Having a society in which everyone was very similar is not a good idea to me. Although I am a perfectionist, I don’t believe in perfect communities or perfect people. I strive for diversity and I think it should be supported.

I agree with Ben Hackshaw when he says that The Giver is more of a Utopian Society than we are. In The Giver it seems like everything is perfect. They all have the same possessions and they all follow the laws and people rarely break them. Nobody is left out of anything and everyone gets a job, which means there would be no unemployment in their community. People are rarely upset that their job is boring because they get their jobs based on their interests and what they do well. However I disagree with Ben H when he says that we need diversity. I think it would be good not to have diversity. If everyone acted kindly then there would be less disagreements among people. Also everyone would believe the same things so no one would have disagreements about religion. Overall I agree with Ben H when he says that The Giver is a Utopian Society, but disagree when he says that we need diversity.

I agree with Tyler Nerthling when he says, “I think that it is not worthwhile to lose all diversity because variety is the spice of life.” This is definitely true in my opinion. I agree with him when he says that if we have a life schedule then life is just boring and predicting. Although “sameness” could have its advantages it also has a lot of disadvantages, so why would we want to get rid of it? It is not worthwhile. I also agree with Sara Stroup when she says that we learn from each other with diversity. You may think that well you can learn without diversity but you truly can’t in Jonas’s community. The reason for this is because in Jonas’s community it is against the rules to judge people and talk about their mistakes. I think that this represents no diversity but with diversity life is more colorful and fun because you can learn from others.
I disagree with Stephanie when she says that an advantage of “sameness” is that jealousy and competition would be eliminated. I think these two things create diversity and help our moral character grow. Have you heard the saying, “A little healthy competition can never hurt? Well, I have. I believe that competition teaches us to be good sports and other skills and lessons needed in life. Well without competition you wouldn’t always need those lessons but competition is good exercise and helps you build better relationships with your friends.

Some similarities between our society and the society in The Giver are that we have laws as they do. We have homes and schools just like in The Giver. If a community didn’t have schools or homes I don’t think anyone would want to live there. In our society we celebrate birthdays every year. In The Giver they also celebrate birthdays. In our community we have jobs, bikes and planes. In The Giver they have all those things. The advantages of maybe having sameness would be is you can’t point someone out for being odd. People won’t be prejudges against other people. There will also be no jealousy that people might have against others. The loss of diversity is not worthwhile. I think diversity is good because without it live would be very boring. With diversity it gives people a chance to be different from everyone else. In a way that could be bad and in a way it could be good. In a way loss of diversity would be good to some people by someone might want to be just like someone. Also, if someone thinks there better than you and you want to be like them, you will be just like them if there is a loss of diversity.

I also very much disagree with Dylan when he says diversity is not needed. Diversity creates a unique society. It creates spontaneous decisions, surprises, and simply an interesting community. I also think that he is wrong when he says that if there is no diversity everyone will be nice and no one will argue. I don't think it will solve this problem. In The Giver the strict rules solve the problem of bullying. Personally, I think that we learn a lot from diversity and that is why I disagree with Dylan Cook.

But I also agree with Tyler when he says that we both have schools and houses. Also, I agree with Kelsey when she said that if there is no diversity then everyone’s life would be the same. The Giver's society and our society are alike in many ways, but they are also different in many ways. One way in which they are the same is the fact that each of the societies have rules. Also, in both societies if you break the rules there are consequences. As well, in both of our societies we have to work for a living. One last similarity between our society and theirs is that we both have to go to school before we begin working in our profession. Even though we have many similarities we are also different. Our societies are different because we have a lot of diversity but they do not. This could be very helpful because it gets rid of things like jealousy, prejudice, and other negative feelings. Even though I think there are many downsides to diversity, I think there are more positive sides than negative. Some of these upsides include competition. I believe that competition brings out the best in a person as long as they do not take it too far. These are some of the ways that our societies are alike and different.

Even though our society and the society in the giver are like black and white, there are still some similarities. The Giver’s society has schools that work to educate young people, and homes for seniors to live. Apart from that, these two societies could hardly be any more different. For example, in the Giver society, there is no competition whatsoever. In contrast, our society lives and breaths on it. Millions of kids across the globe play hundreds of organized sports, and televised competiton, like baseball and football, draw enormous ratings. The differences go on and on; the giver society has elders choose jobs for the young people, while our society has no such restraints. And unlike our society, “the community” doesn’t allow its people to have children. (They take pills for it). Also, the community makes rules to make sure no one ever brags or teases anyone for being different. It doesn’t allow people to show their character. The community ends up making everyone almost the same. The advantages of that are that people can relate to each other, because they have the same amount of free time and the same schedule. They all have very similar problems. They even have the same family structure as their peers. So, they can talk about there life, and not have to wonder if the other person is going through the same things. Maybe it helps them bond closer together. Other than that, there isn’t many advantages. Even though everybody is doing things for the common good, I don’t think the lack of diversity in the Giver society is worth while. I think that the point of life is to enjoy it, and life wouldn’t be fun if everyone around you was the same. Even if more work is done in the Giver society than our society, the dullness the giver society must go through just isn’t worth it.

I agree with my good friend Eric Brockwell when he says that controlling how many children are born helps the community in many ways. He says that it keeps the society organized. That is true, because it would be easier to figure out what kids belong to what parents. Also, I realized that kids can’t get special attention if they have lots of siblings. Eric also said that “by controlling the number of family members, overpopulation will never be a problem.” There would be a lot less traffic, and that would be nice. He also noticed that without overpopulation, there would be no hunger. I had never thought of it like that before. The food could be equally spread to every family, and they would always have enough. I had never realized (before I read Eric’s post) that giving each family the same amount of children could have so many advantages.

I also agree with her when she said that they are normal by meaning that they have feelings. I would have to say that I also agree with Ben W. when he said that there is competition between us as a community, but with the society in The Giver there is no competition with each person. I agree with Nevin when he said we need diversity and that we're only human when we make mistakes. I also agree with Chris when he said that not everyone is the same because Asher and Jonas are different. I think that not everything is the same. I agree with Grace, also, when she said that our world and their world is very different. I would have to disagree with Audrey when she said we have jobs. I know she meant that our parents do, but some kids at age 11,or 12, do not most likely have jobs. I also disagree with Zoe when she said that every child gets the same toy. That I think, is partially true. Though they each get the same bicycle, they get a different comfort object, although the comfort objects get recycled.

These are some similarities and differences between our society and the society in The Giver. One similarity would be that we have people and families in our community like they do. Another would be that we have rules that help control our society from being in mayhem. Yet there climate is controlled, but it is controlled to a degree of where you have very few freedoms to do what you want to do. This is very much different from our society because we have many freedoms of what we can. Since there society is so controlled it eliminates a lot of competition, while in our society it is controlled but not as controlled as theirs, we can compete more making life seem more enjoyable. Sameness has a few advantages but a few disadvantages. One is that there would be no teasing or bullying about how someone is different than others. But on the other hand I believe this lack of diversity is a bad thing because, all humans are different and special in there own way. If there is no diversity, life would be very bland and society itself would have no color it would be just one big spot of grey. Those are some reasons on how our society and The Giver’s society are similiar and different.

Many people have made some great points about The Giver. Some of the ones we can totally do without with is one of Dylan Cook. I strongly disagree with him saying that the loss of diversity is worth it. So what Dylan’s saying is that he wants everything to be bland and boring. Diversity is what makes us all unique. If we ignore diversity then we won’t get far in the world. Tons of people like tons of different personalities and I don’t think we should take those personalities away. On the other hand, I do agree with Logan Finnecy when he says that without diversity everyone would make the same moves and no one would ever win the game.

Some similarities between our society and the society in The Giver are that both our society and theirs have rules. In order to have a successful society you need rules to keep order instead of having people running all over the place and being frantic. Another similarity between our society and theirs is that we both have punishments for disobeying the rules, even though we have different punishments. If you disobey an important rule in The Giver's society, you are released from the city, but, if you break an important rule in our society, you get sent to jail. Also, we both go to school and get an education, but in our society you go to school when you are young and also when you are growing up and getting an education for what job you want and you get to pick your job ,but, they get their job at 12 and are assigned a job. We also both have jobs even though we get them at different ages and in different ways.

One of the advantages of sameness is that sometimes you could a friend by meeting them in clubs or doing things that interest both of you. Another advantage is that you don’t have to argue as much if you have more things in common. Sometimes when societies have things in common, it could be good or bad. If the societies have minor similarities, then that is good, but if societies have many major things in common like how they dress and what their houses look like it could be a bad thing.

I do not think the loss of diversity would be worthwhile. Without diversity, there would be no point in life because everyone would be the same as you, you would do and like the same things, and you would not be able to learn about or from other people. One thing that would happen if we did not have diversity is that, if you go to the grocery store, everyone would want to buy the same things, or if you went to an amusement park everyone would be the line for the same ride. The reason to why I say this is because I believe that to have a perfect society, each person has to have their own personality and uniqueness which makes them who they are.

I also agree with Tyler when he talks about how there would be no crimes because everyone has the same things. This could make their society more of a safe place and no one would have to worry about getting robbed or hurt. I do not agree with Elise when she says that kids wouldn’t be upset because they don’t have as many siblings as some might. I think that it is good if not all families have 2 children one male, and one female. I think that, that is what makes some families special, because if some families have 4 kids and some have 1 then it gives children the experience of having a different number of siblings, and how their family lives as in like how their everyday routine is with their family. I also agree with Austin Guo when he says that the sameness would help people bond together and when people work they would have great benefits! Some of the similarities in this community that relate to ours is that we both have family's, houses, education, jobs, and also aircraft.
Although the family's, jobs, and education are a little different because of certain rules in the society. Plus we have many emotions and feelings as the people in their society have. As you may know, there are a few advantages that "sameness" has for their community. One of these is that the community has all the same advantages, which means children will not brag to the other kids in their year about how they have an assignment while the other kids don't. Also, another advantage is that there would be no over population which means everyone will have a house, and enough food for their whole family. Another advantage they have is that money would never be a problem in their community since everyone is assigned a certain good parying job. Finally, they have an advantage on the jobs they get. This is because the people get a job that is neccessary and
important but is also an enjoyment to them. They enjoy it since the Elders pick this assignment based on their interests and hobbies.
I simply think that the loss of diversity is definitly not worth while. This is because our society is a much more interesting, exciting, and a unique place with all of the different people, cultures, and traditions. Could you imagine what it's like in a community where no one stands out, no one has a very special talent, and no one celebrated a certain holiday? Well, to me it is obvious everyone would be bored in this community of
people who are all very alike, and never got to be themselves.

One similarity between our society and the society in “The Giver” is that both societies have structures that a relatively the same. They both have a way of dealing with criminals or wrongdoers, they both have a way to educate young children, and they both have jobs set up for the adults. One advantage of “sameness” is that everyone is content. Nobody is jealous of what somebody else has because everyone has the same things. There also wouldn’t be any problems with poverty or unemployment because everyone is working toward the common good and there would be no need for money. Another advantage with “sameness” is that nobody thinks they’re better than anyone else. Because everybody in “The Giver” is the same, there isn’t an opportunity to compare races, salaries, or education. I don’t think this loss of diversity is worthwhile because they lose a lot of choices. If they don’t have choices, they don’t have freedom. I believe that people should have freedom and choices.

I agree with Dylan when he said that sameness is good because then there would be no robberies. I don’t think that anyone would want to steal anything if they had the exact things everybody else has. That would be a way that sameness would be good. However, I believe that diversity is better for a community than sameness. I agree with Tyler when he says “If there is no variety or diversity, then life would always be the same boring routine.” I believe that communities need diversity to keep people happy. If everyday, you woke up, went to work, came home, and went to bed every day with no changes, life would become very boring. I also agree with Eric when he says “I believe that diversity is what makes life interesting.” If there is no diversity or choices, you can’t make decisions by yourself. In “The Giver”, the citizens have only one choice, to follow the rules or to disobey them. If the citizens follow the rules, all of their decisions will be made for them. If they disobey the rules, they will be released from the community. So, in reality, they have to obey the rules.

I also agree with Audrey when she said about how if everyone acted the same there wouldn’t be any surprises when not having diversity. There would be nothing to look up to like when coming to school, when you know what will happen. You would know because every day would be the same. I disagree with Colleen when she said that when they get their comfort object taken away at sevens it would prevent them getting made fun of by the eights. She said this for one of the advantages for sameness. I don’t think that the eights would make fun of them for still having their comfort object. I really don’t think people would do that, but they might. I also agree with Jake when he said that when have sameness you can’t point out someone for being odd. I like it how Chris said that both societies are alike because both of them have unique people like Asher and Jonas. I found this interesting because it made me think that we are actually both pretty alike, and how even I used to think that The Giver’s society had very bland, ununique people. But he made me think about it and made me realize that there people aren’t very ununique at all. Yes, I still agree with a lot of people on how because of the loss of diversity of different belongings it makes life a bit blander Chris really made me think. I also agree with Anna on how she noted that because all families have a mom, a dad, and two kids (one boy and one girl), it makes life seem a bit more bland. Because I find it interesting on how we all compare (in a non-serious way) about how many siblings we have and what gender are they. I never really thought about this being a factor of loss of diversion until I read her comment. But I agree and also disagree with Eric on how he said that both our schools appear to be similar because they haven’t given us much detail yet. The minor detail that is making me disagree is that they have to make a long formal apology, but all we do is say “sorry I’m late” and hand them our hall pass. Finally, I disagree with Cole to a degree. This is because he says that both societies are alike because there are families, houses, and jobs. I kind of disagree with the word job because in their society you are given an assignment and you have no choice what that will be. But, on the other hand I find that it can be said as job because the elders who assign the assignments try to carefully assign jobs that best fit the person’s interests, hobbies, and where they seem to spend most of there volunteer hours.

I think there should be just a little jealousy and competition, to stir things up in the society and make things more interesting. Like Taylor said, when people lose in a competition, they train themselves to be better. When they train themselves, they are learning from their mistakes, from not doing something or from doing something wrong. I like how Emily said that bad experiences build character. I believe she is right, because if you do something wrong you learn not to do that, making you stronger. I agree with Garrett when he says that what is received should be earned. The Giver and the way they run things is very different from the way our society is run, but there is some similarities between the two societies. One is there is homes for people that have retired and need a place to stay. Also the kids have to go to school. We also have many differences in our society we have freedom to do what we want to a extent. For one we have the freedom to have as many kids as we want. Also the government does not “release” us for mistakes like flying over a place we are not allowed to fly over. Instead of “releasing” the person goes to jail or any other punishment than releasing. Another difference is people choose their job on their own. Being same in your experiences with every one else could be good but it also has its disadvantages. I disagree with Alexa when she commented saying that the people would have been scared anyway if a jet flew over the community in 2010. For one, I don't think the plane was flying low enough for the houses to shake. Why would a (supposedly) lost pilot fly so low of a town? For seconds, pilots really aren't aloud to fly over the community. Jonas said when deliveries came in the pilots always unloaded on the other side of the river, then turned around to fly away in the other direction. I agree with Chris Hauk when he says that our society and the givers society both have unique people. (For example, Jonas and Asher.) If you think about it,it's true, every community has to have different people because no matter what people try to do to make us all alike, there can be one little thing about us that is different.Chris had given the example on how Asher is usually a little off and unfocused, while Jonas is very worried throughout the book and is generous. I also agree with Caitlin when she says an advantage to sameness is that there would be no bullies. She has said this because bullies always look for the differences in people and make fun of them. When she has said that no one would judge people by their appearance or physical ability to do something, I agreed. In Emma's comment, I had thought about what she said about if there wasn't diversity everything would be plain and boring, and everyone would be just like robots, and I had agreed. This is because it is true that no one would have anything fun to share, like traditions, language, dance, or culture.
In my opinion, nothing would be exciting about being the same. I disagree with Kelsey when she had said that we are all the same since we all have talents. This is something that is not true, because the people in the community of the giver cannot learn new sports, dances, languages, or any special activity. There are no jobs in their community that has to do with singing, acting, playing a sport, or competiting. They do not have a chance at all to express their talents, or even discover their talents. We should be allowed to have as many people in the community as we want, though, Whether the amount of children in a family be as little as 1 or as high as 19! There should be no limit. The community would not be a utopia if there was no room for more children. Although, I expect that the Elders made that rule for another reason. I also disagree with Austin Guo when he mentioned that “sameness” is good because it eliminates jealousy, but I think jealousy is important because it helps us grow. He also said that it was an advantage because everything would be expected, but to me, that is not an advantage! Life is supposed to be full of surprises, and diversity brings these exciting moments of revelation. That is one of the reasons I support diversity.

On the surface it seems like there are many similarities between our society and the society in “The Giver”. There are families, and the parents have jobs. The families also live in houses. There are children, and they play with other children. The children also attend school. The people in “The Giver” have to live by rules, and the Elders in the community appear to be in charge, which is similar to our government.

Sameness in a community provides everyone with basic necessities, like a job, food, a house, and clothes. Things seem organized. Rules are established so that people behave. In my opinion, the loss of diversity is not worthwhile. Our community is a better place and more interesting, because we have diversity, and because we have the freedom to make choices.

I disagree with Ben Hackshaw when he says that the “community in “The Giver” is a much more utopian society than ours.” Dylan Cook says the society in “The Giver” “seems” perfect, but in many ways it is not. The people can’t choose their job. Parents are separated form their children. The people in “The Giver” don’t elect the Elders and they don’t have a say in the rules. This is not a “utopian” society, it is a communist society. I agree with Grace Westfall when she says that the “society in “The Giver” is disappointing because of the lack of diversity.” What would our society be like without diversity? Everything would be the same! I also agree with Sara Stroup and Antonia Piazza that the unique things in our community make it an interesting place to live. “Sameness” doesn’t allow for diversity.

I agree with Tyler when he says “the advantages are that one family will not hoard all the food and items”. I agree with him because if everyone was the same they would probably have them same amount of things too. I also agree with Erica when she says “if everything is the same there is no room for improvement”. I agree with Erica because if there was no improvement there would be no new games or inventions because everything would be the same. I also agree with Colleen when she says “having the same things and doing the same things would not be very fun”. I agree with Colleen because if there was not diversity life would be boring and nothing would change.

I believe that this "sameness" has its ups and downs like any other lifestyle. On the bright side, there's no hunger, everyone is content, and there's no need for greed and selfishness. They live in a world where everything is provided for them and they all want to offer something up to the comunity. This is a spectacular lifestyle in the idea that there's no suffering or pain. As much like paradise as it seems, this world has a great loss of diversity and real emotion. Everyone has the same things. No one can truly be different than anybody else. There's no special identity that makes you you. They also take away many of the necessary feelings people should posess. No one can love, feel true compasion, feel angry, sad, or unhappy. Feelings build our charecter like water droplets fill a cloud. We are only human and it's important for us to make mistakes and feel unhappy or you wouldn't have anything to compare happiness to. There is also no way to express feelings. No music or art. These are two elements that make up our every day life. I would rather live in a world run by diversity, expression, and emotion than a world where everything is perfectly the same. Same is not the same as eaqual, which is where true happiness is found.

I agree with Audrey that the main similarity between the world of the Giver and our own is that we have rules that govern our lives. We live our lives by them and eventually they become part of us. Another great point Audrey made was that we have a government that enforces the rules. They have many other similaritys such as friends, family, and planes, but the government and the rules are the two great things our worlds share. I also strongly agree with Grace Westfall on the fact that we need diversity. I like how she pointed out that if we are to realy learn, we need mistakes and differences to learn from. I disagree with Elise when she implys that its a comfort for everyone to recieve the same things so you're not jelous of your friends. If you are a good person you will never feel jelous of you friends, you will only feel happy for them. I thank Elise for saying it would not be worthwhile for everything to be the same. However I totally disagree with Dylan when he says we don't need diversity. What kind of world would we live in if everyone had the things. We'd be boring. No real entertainment, no one would have any strengths or weeknesses because we'd all be the same. I don't know how anyone could want to give up their uniqueness. I wish I could read everyone's but I wouldn't be able to fit it on the page. Thank you for reading. :)

I apologize for missing the first part of the question. I believe that the main similarity between these two worlds is government. We both have a body of people who are professionals in enforcing and creating laws and rules. The differnce is that we don't have as stict rules as in the Giver. No one has to have a bicycle at the age of 9 or get a job when they're 12. We have more of a republic where the government doesn't have to do everything for you. I'm interested in how their government officers get chosen for the task and if it's anything like our process. But the strongest similarity and difference is in the rules and government.

I agree and disagree with Elizabeth because the community in "The Giver" is much more controlled then ours. Also, the children aren't separated from their parents because a majority of them come from the same birth mother. Again, people can't directly choose their jobs, but if you choose your volunteer hours carfully and work hard at it, the elders or commitee who monitor you can lean towards a certain job. As mentioned severall times in the book, the smaller rules are almost always broken and yes I agree with you and Grace when you say that "the society is dissapointing because the lack of diversity." And, our society would be nothing with out diversity. I also mentio that sameness would effect our community greatly because diversity makes different people right for different jobs. From reading in the book I have noted only a few jobs to be placed in, so working hard for one instead of two or three jobs like modern people do, would be a lot easier. The rules of the community in "The Giver" are a lot like the laws in our world today. This I read from Zoe Ras's response.

In the our society, we have meals, jobs, and go to school, just like the people in the Giver do. In the Giver society, the advantages are there will be no hungry, poor, or uneducated citizens in their utopian community. A few disadvantages to being like everyone is having the same experiences growing up. Children know what lies ahead for them by just asking their parents how they grew up. There is no adventuring, or seeing and trying new things. This would be a dull way of life in my opinion. You can’t even play games, because they involve competition which can lead to jealousy. There wouldn’t be any reason to have goals and dreams to strive for anymore. Everyone would be the same with the same haircut and clothes and no way to express their true inner self. I think that this loss of diversity is definitely not worthwhile.

I agree with Chris Hauk when he says that we have a little bit of the Giver’s society in our own. He is also right by saying that we all have unique personalities. I feel a sense of disagreement though when I read Ben Hackshaw’s response that the society in the Giver book is more of an utopian society than our own. Of course, he is right in a way because in our community , we have hunger and starvation. Finally, I in a way agree with Emily Thayer when she says that a controlled society would be a bad thing. We wouldn’t be able to make our own decisions with our life, and we would not be able to show our diversity from others. As stated by Emily, we learn from mistakes and life experiences. This should make us better people, because we want to achieve something in life. We shouldn’t just do something because a rule says so or because we are assigned a certain job. I disagree because it would be better without the hunger, illness, and other horrible things around us. Overall, I somewhat agree and disagree with Emily’s opinion on an utopian society being a bad idea.

I think that our society is more independent then the society in the book. In our society we are allowed to do more. We are allowed to have children if we wish, marry our favorite girl, chose the number of kids we have, start working when we want, and many more. I kind of think it is a bad thing to all be the same because then you will not be unique in any way. For instance in or society we can chose what we want to do and what we like to do, but in the book every one is given a job based on there abilities are and what the like. What if though after awhile you didn’t like your Job then what? Unlike in our society where you can your job and get a new one, there’s you are stuck with it no matter what. Another thing that makes our world so unique is its people. There are different nationalities and races. In the book all the people are the same. They cant “come” to another village like we can go to a different country. I think it is not good to live in a utopian community because it is to much like a communist country. Everyone is only allowed to do what the leader tells them to do.

I believe that Antonia is 100% correct with what she said. I like how she named similarities then differences. What I don’t agree with though is Erica’s thought. When she said it is good not to have jealousy or hate. For sure having no hate is wonderful but if there is no bad what is good. If someone came up to you everyday and helped you when you dropped your books how would you feel if the stopped. In our world today if someone dropped there book sand someone picked them up it would be an honor so to speak. You and the person that you helped would feel good about themselves. Jealousy I think is selfish but with out it what can we strive for. If some one has a new game and you want it really bad, you should save up your money and buy it. When Erica said that in there community everything was the same and with to many similarities you have nothing to strive for I agreed 100%. She also made a good point that people need to be different. I think that if people are to much the same then you may get sick of each other. This is why I agree and disagree with Erica and Antonia.
